Technical Program
SPR 2008 and SSPR 2008 received a total of 175 paper submissions from many different countries around the world, thus giving the workshop an international clout, as it was the case of past workshops. The S+SSPR 2008 program contains 98 accepted papers, with 56 for oral presentations and 42 for poster presentations. In addition to parallel oral sessions for SPR and SSPR, there is also one joint oral session with papers of interest to both the SPR and SSPR communities. A recent trend that has emerged in the pattern recognition and machine learning research communities is the study of graph-based methods that integrate statistical and structural approaches. For this reason, a special session on graph-based methods was co-organized by Technical Committee TC15 to explore new research issues in this topic. Moreover, invited talks are presented by four prominent speakers: Horst Bunke, Professor of the Department of Computer Science, at the University of Bern, Switzerland; Pedro Domingos, Professor of the Computer Science Department at the Washington State University, USA; Tin-Kam Ho, leader of the Computing Research Group of Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent, at Murray Hill, USA, and winner of the 2008 Pierre Devijver Award; Ludmila Kuncheva, Reader of the School of Computer Science, Bangor University, United Kingdom.
The S+SSPR 2008 program is spanned over a three day period from Thursday, December 4, 2008 to Saturday, December 6, 2008. Thursday has one invited talk, 4 oral sessions (2 SPR and 2 SSPR; one of which is the special session on graph based methods), 1 poster session and the Welcome Reception. Friday has two invited talks, fours oral sessions (2 SPR and 2 SSPR), 1 poster session, the TC1 and TC2 meetings and the banquet. Finally, Saturday has one invited talk, the joint SPR and SSPR oral session, two more oral sessions (one SPR and one SSPR), and 1 poster session. Obviously the Opening Ceremony is at the beginning of the day on Thursday, December 4, and the Closing Ceremony is at the end of the day on Saturday, December 6. S+SSPR 2008 attendees that are planning to attend the ICPR 2008 conference can make arrangements to travel to Tampa (2 hours ride from Orlando) on Sunday, December 7, 2008.
